"Under the strong leadership of Board Chair Devender Sandhu, a visionary strategic plan was created which ensures VPL remained responsive to the community, evolving as required. SMART goals and outcome measurements were established to measure success.The Board embraced and inspired innovation through the establishment of three creations spaces. Individually, trustees monitored library innovations and during their international travels, return to enthusiastically sharing observations with fellow trustees.  The Board was tenacious in pursuing an aggressive building plan which has resulted in the opening of 3 new facilities, planning and designing 3 additional new libraries currently under construction, and designing another to begin construction 2020!  This Board has embraced trust and accountability and implemented an effective self-evaluation process. The goal of this Board is uncompromised, to Enrich Inspire and Transform. This Board is achieving just that!"

2019 York Region District School Board Trustee Candidate                    Vaughan - WARD 1 and  2 


Deven Sandhu is a Corporate Director with over 20 years’ of industrial leadership experience in regenerative medicine, vaccine and biologics development targeting infectious disease and cancer programs, international public health, health economics, non-profit board(s) and planning of health programs.  Deven values innovation, hard work, teamwork, and perseverance.

He graduated in Life Sciences stream  and led his soccer and field hockey university teams.

Deven's academic prowess and leadership abilities earned him a Commonwealth scholarship to University College London (UK), where he graduated  with a doctorate degree in Life Sciences in cancer research.

He also successfully pursued a Business degree (MBA) from the Schulich and Kellogg Business Schools and obtained corporate Governance designation (ICD.D) from the Rotman School of Management and the Institute of Corporate Directors.  

He spent the next two decades in Healthcare Industry in academic as well Biopharmaceutical Industry.

Volunteered for a variety of community organizations which included serving as a

- Advisor, Ontario Bioscience Innovation Organization (OBIO),

- Trustee, Vice-Chair and Chairman at Vaughan Public Library Board (VPLB; 2007-19), 

-Director of Providence Healthcare Foundation (PHF) 

-Executive committee member, Vice-Chair & Chair of St. Robert Catholic High School Council (2013-Current),

​-Biotechnology Council of Ontario

​-Member, Community Relations Committee, City of Vaughan

-President of EMBA Class KS03, Schulich-Kellogg EMBA Program, Schulich Business School 

- Participated in charitable causes which included raising funds for George Knudson Foundation, Breast Cancer Foundation, Terry Fox Foundation, Princess Margaret Hospital  and most importantly United Way Campaigns in different organizations.
